Alternative Topic

Hi, this is an alternative assignment to Miss Aspas' birthday party topic.
-What are your favourite websites and why?
-Are any of these websites in English or have any contents in English?
-What do you do when you are on your computer : chat, send emails, surf the net?
-What information or links would you like to find on this blog?

You can answer some of these questions or just one or two of them. As long as you want, all contributions are welcome.

  5. For Fajardo.. dunno wether your comment is just a pun or an actual linguistic question... but I suppose it's the former as you can easily find answers to your question online...
However I'll be willing to help if you want a relevant answer to your question...

PS: welcome to Aida, thanks for dropping in a few lines!!

  8. It was a serious question, I really don't know the difference between "nearly" and "almost" and maybe I'm not the best person to look for stuffs online but I didn't find a good answer! :S

  9. My favourite website? Uhm... That's such a difficult question! When I'm on the Internet, I visit a lot of different websites. I check my mail everyday, but I also check Facebook, Popomundo, my fotolog, Svamania (the best website about Sva-ters you could find) and my dolçaina's Tuenti (she wanted to have one so I had to do it for her...). Sometimes I visit Gent d'Antella's blogspot because they post a lot of interesting news about our Town Council. I also love Valencianisme.com, a website about Valencian politics. I often visit the Svapèdia, a wikipedia about Sva-ters, because I collabore with it.

  10. Fajardo, according to Göran Kjellmer from
Göteborg University, and following his research on the topic. The differences found between almost and nearly are these:
-almost is much more frequent than nearly and is therefore likely to be less specialised than the latter
-almost occurs more in literary styles of writing than in popular text types,
whereas nearly is a preferred word in the news media.
    -Neither of them is used much in the spoken language;
-their collocations distinguish the two words sharply, so that:
    a) almost is characteristically
followed by adverbs (almost certainly), adjectives (almost
impossible), pronouns (almost anything) and prepositions (almost by definition),
b)nearly is equally characteristically followed by numerals (nearly 200 people).
These three aspects can be seen to be interrelated.
-Nearly, which occurs more often in the news media, where precision and factual information are more focused than in literary styles, is to some degree specialised in that it is preferably
    used to modify precise figures.

Almost and nearly turn out, on closer inspection, to be
partly overlapping but in important respects clearly contrasting words. Even if
they are closely related in meaning, corpus studies can show that they are used
differently by idiomatic speakers of English.
